Reality is what is, ideal is what an individual thinks reality should be.

Do I win?

Ahh, you win the definition contest. Any words in more depth?

(such as societal ideals, personal ideals, anything almost)

I like the way Cervantes outs it:

"Too much sanity may be madness.
But maddest of all, to see life as it is.....and not as it should be!"

Don Quixote - Miguel de Cervantes

Reality is a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.

Now that is something that I have to agree with...simply trying to imagine living in reality 24/7 is a tough pill to swallow. Little doses of reality in the form of occassional "checks" (haha) are very much appreciated instead.

Open question: What is your personal ideal? Do you think you have that ideal more because of reality or because of the imposing ideals of others?

What is my personal ideal? I always thought ideal as an idea. What idea to I hold to live off of? The only one I have is to not have one. I feel that you should always be plyable and ready to adapt to change. That is not to say you can not be firm, but excercise disgretion without refusing new 'ideals'.

It is hard to find the exact portions that make up the sum. I live in reality and as a human I'm bound to my fellow humans. I adapt to generalized specifics, but that is not to say I dont offer any of my former experiences to influence my understanding of new events.

Interesting...I think of an ideal as more of a dream, whether it is actually realistic or far from it. In that way, my ideals don't force me into a cookie cutter mold nor hinder my options; however, they allow me relief from that which I wish were different. So, I suppose my ideals are utensils of escapism.

If you dream an alternate reality it is therefore real outside of our current reality even if it only exists in your mind it still exists. There can not be a "reality" other than the physical world that most of us accept as real or the socially accepted reality of culture and lifestyle. Other cultures and lifestyles exist differently to us yet they still exist. Eg. It is not our reality to experience communism yet it has been china's. This does not mean communism is not real, but not real to us so within reason anything may already be or at anytime could be our reality.
